Tell your MP: Government must move away from toxic social media platforms

Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and YouTube track and profile their users so that they can target advertising towards them. Their business models fuel online harms by pushing more and more extreme content to users. Despite this, these platforms are one of the primary ways that government departments share public information. We shouldn't be forced to use toxic platforms that track and profile us in order to get public information.

Tell your MP to support the EDM calling on the Government to ensure that all public sector social media content is published on open, decentralised and federated platforms!

What’s going on?

Tell your MP to support the 'Public sector communications, decentralised platforms and local journalism'  EDM (Early Day Motion) 411, tabled by Siân Berry MP.  No member of the public should be required to hold an account with a single commercial platform (X, Facebook, etc.) in order to receive public information.

The EDM calls on the Government to ensure that all public sector social media content is published on open, decentralised and federated platforms, including those based on the ActivityPub and AT protocols, as well as on established platforms, so that members of the public can follow official communications without being compelled to use services they find harmful

It also calls on the Government to divert its digital advertising spend away from Big Tech platforms and direct it instead to advertising on local and national newspaper websites. This would mean that government advertising would not be enabling the tracking and profiling of the public by Google and Meta. It would also reduce the unfair extraction of advertising revenues by Big Tech and support the sustainability of independent local and national journalism.

The UK needs to end its over-reliance on extractive Big Tech compnies. This EDM will empower the public sector and the citizens it needs to communicate with.
