Tell your MP to attend the debate on digital IDs

Nearly three million people signed the petition 'Do not introduce Digital ID cards' . The government, however, is pushing ahead regardless of public concern.

Parliament will debate this critical issue on 8 December 2025. It's time to make them understand what is at stake.

The government is at risk of creating a digital surveillance infrastructure that will fundamentally change how we live. What begins as an ID card could quickly expand into a system where we are forced to prove who we are as we go about our daily lives.

Once this infrastructure exists, mission creep is inevitable. What starts as 'voluntary' becomes mandatory. A system that is just for workers expands to everyone, including children.

If enough MPs attend the debate and listen to our genuine concern, we can stop a surveillance state before it's built.

I'm writing to urge you to attend the critical debate on digital ID taking place on December 8th. 
This matters enormously to me – and to the nearly 3 million people who signed the petition against Digital ID cards. It’s important our concerns are heard are in Parliament.

These are my concerns:

1) Digital ID already exists and it’s failing
It’s not clear why we need digital ID to restrict immigration when the UK already has a digital ID scheme in place for migrants. The e-visa scheme for migrants offers a stark warning of the problems that we would see if digital ID is rolled out to everyone. Data errors, glitches and Internet outages have left people unable to prove their right to be in the UK. People have lost job offers, university places rental offers and mortgages. One man was even made homeless because of a Home Office error. We need to learn from these failings not embark on another digital ID scheme.
       
2) Mission creep is happening 
First, we were told digital IDs would only be required by workers. A week later, there were reports that they would be needed for people to access benefits.¹ Then, it was reported that the scheme would be extended to over-13s.²

This is textbook mission creep – and it's happening before digital ID has even been introduced.  This is undermining trust and making people fearful that digital ID will end up being a surveillance system that tracks us from cradle to grave. 
       
3) We don’t have enough protection
Even a well-designed privacy-protecting digital ID would require robust protections. But the UK is moving in the opposite direction: politicians are discussing leaving the ECHR, the Data Use and Access Act has weakened our data rights, and ICO enforcement has collapsed.
We cannot introduce digital ID into this environment.
