Build our grassroots power to defend the open Internet

Keir Starmer's social media ban is an attack on the open Internet - and we need to fight back.

It will soon be virtually impossible to create, share and use content without going through a digital ID check – we’ll be forced to hand over personal ID documents or undergo facial recognition scans just to be online or to use features on our phone.

Demanding ID before access will change the Internet as we know it, harming millions of children and adults’ freedom of expression and privacy rights. It will also make us less safe. We’ll be at risk of our personal data being hacked. This has already happened to tens of thousands of Discord users whose government IDs were exposed when a third-party age verification provider was compromised.

This is a global fight but we need to fight from the ground up, building a grassroots movement to challenge governments, Big Tech and save the open Internet. Help us to fight back and win.

Fight back with grassroots power

Open Rights Group was founded by members of the public who decided the UK needed an organisation that would fight for their digital rights. Ever since, this grassroots support has been fundamental to who we are and how we win.

ORG doesn’t accept money from the government or big tech. We need your support to help us build a solid grassroots base that will resist these latest attacks and save the open Internet.

Every donation will make a real difference.

  • £25 could help produce campaign materials for a local action.

  • £75 could help mobilise, train and support a group of grassroots organisers.

  • £150 could fund a day of global action, helping local groups organise events, mobilise volunteers and grow the movement.

Can you help us to fight back and win? As a thank you, we have some great perks.
